David “Dave” Preisler grew up in northwest Minnesota where dedicated educators and programs like 4-H and FFA inspired him to pursue agricultural education. Preisler built a foundation of knowledge and relationships that shaped his successful, long-term agricultural career.
Preisler seamlessly mastered and leveraged his ability to connect people to agriculture and each other. Additionally, his invaluable network helped him serve pig farmers and many agricultural sectors.
Decades of Serving the Pork Industry
Preisler joined the Minnesota Pork Producers Association (MPPA) in 1994. For 28 years, he worked alongside farmers, allied industry and staff to advocate for their needs, navigate challenges and ensure Minnesota agriculture could thrive. Whether shaping Minnesota’s Feedlot Rules or working on the AGREET research initiative, Preisler credits collaboration as the main contributor to success. His peers note that one of his strengths is the ability to identify specific needs to address today that may be a challenge tomorrow.
“The work wasn’t just about today—it was about building a future. Promoting farmers’ values, protecting their interests and ensuring they had the tools to succeed were always at the forefront of what we did,” said Preisler.
Navigating Challenges
Preisler’s ability to navigate challenges in an ever-evolving industry complemented his dedication to farmers. Some of the toughest obstacles in his career involved guiding the industry through large-scale challenges like H1N1 and COVID-19, teaching decision-makers how the industry builds trust through the We Care® Ethical Principles and demonstrating that promoting pork’s nutrition benefits to consumers can add value to the product. Regardless of the situation, Preisler’s efforts always centered on ensuring the pork industry would sustain, grow and thrive in Minnesota.
Life-Long Commitment
Preisler recognizes that while a lot has changed over the years, pork producers’ integrity and commitment to their products and communities have not wavered. Despite retiring in June 2022, he is still making a difference locally, but in a new role.
“Retirement hasn’t meant stepping away from service. Today, as a LeSueur County Commissioner, I’m still passionate about supporting rural communities and agriculture. It’s a continuation of the work I’ve always loved,” said Preisler.
State Executive Award Recipient
While honored to be the recipient of the 2025 Paulson-Whitmore State Executive Award presented at National Pork Industry Forum, Preisler said the award isn’t about him. Rather, he prefers to credit everyone who believes in the future of agriculture and the strength of America’s communities.
“It’s humbling to be recognized for doing what I’ve always felt was my calling—supporting Minnesota’s pig farmers and their communities. Agriculture has always been at the heart of my life, and it’s been an honor to contribute in my own way,” said Preisler.
