Evaluation of Processing Fluids and Other Novel Sample Types for the Detection and Surveillance of Less-Virulent ASFV Strains
January 4, 2023By Aruna Ambagala
Based on the data from this study, we can suggest that PF is suitable to screen young swine herds for ASF.

An African Swine Fever (ASF) positive cohort study: Validating various PCR tests and sample types for African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) detection in boars; and determining the possibility of transmission via artificial insemination
October 29, 2022By Dr. Darwin Reicks
The first study using experimentally ASFV inoculated adult, commercial boars to determine which sample types and PCR procedures were optimum in detecting ASFV in boars and gilts. Additionally, it proved that insemination of ASFV infected semen to naïve gilts resulted in transmission of the virus.

Evaluation of meat juice and muscle swabs using OIE-approved real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from swine with clinically compatible signs of ASF in Ugandan slaughterhouses
July 27, 2022By Karyn Havas
This research project assessed the African swine fever virus’s (ASFV) nucleic acid detection in slaughter expedient samples: diaphragm meat juice, diaphragm muscle swab, spleen, and spleen swab.

Investigating Methods for Decontamination of Interior Surfaces (Cabs) of Transportation Vehicles
July 11, 2022By Jordan Gebhardt
It is widely known and understood that transportation vehicles can serve as a potential route of pathogen transmission within swine production systems. The movement of these vehicles within multiple...

Evaluation of African swine fever virus antibody detection and viral nucleic acid detection dynamics in swine in various sample types
July 11, 2022By Karyn Havas
This research project assessed the African swine fever virus’s (ASFV) nucleic acid and antibody detection in tonsil scrapings, cheek swabs, oral fluids, blood, and some tissues across three...

Detection of African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) in Pork Meat Products by PCR Assay
July 11, 2022By Kyoung-Jin Yoon
African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease causing high mortality in members of the Suidae family. Besides animal health, the disease also imposes serious economic consequences,...

Evaluation of Meat Juice as Sample Matrix for the Detection of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) Antigen and Nucleic Acids as Well as Antibodies to FMDV; and Comparison of 3 Real-Time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction Assays for FMDV in Swine Oral Fluids
July 11, 2022By Charles Nfon, Ph.D.
Particular specimens are usually required for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) testing. These samples include liquid removed from blisters caused by FMDV (vesicular fluid), pieces of skin...

Low Cost Mobile CO2 Vaporizer System Prototype – 2020
May 23, 2022By Colin Gendre
Currently there is a lack of mobile, low-cost vaporizer systems readily available to provide CO2 gas for large scale depopulation at swine operations. To better utilize CO2 for depopulation, there is...

Validating Pathogen Nucleic Acid Extraction from Animal Feed and Feed Ingredients
May 23, 2022By Diego Diel
The risk of feed serving as a vehicle for pathogen introduction into swine farms and production systems became evident after the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) outbreak in the US in 2013....

Susceptibility of Pigs to FMDV Infection Via Natural Ingestion: Establishing Minimum Oral Infectious Dose and Evaluating Potential Benefits of Chemical Mitigants
May 20, 2022By Jonathan Arzt
Import of animal feed and feed ingredients from other countries can lead to unintentional import of foreign pathogens, such as viruses. While there are many rules controlling imports of animals and...
