Fresh swine manure was separated into seven different liquid portions with size-ranges; <2.0, <1.4, <1.0, <0.5, <0.25, <0.15 and <0.075 mm, respectively. The separation was effected by successive sieving of the fresh swine manure through a series of seven ASTM standard wire screen sieves with opening of 2.0, 1.4, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25, 0.15 and 0.075 mm. Manure was stored in 91.44 cm (3ft.) deep plexiglas columns to simulate under the slat storage pits, or in other types of holding pits. Results indicate that solids-liquid separation may not be effective in reducing odor problems from swine facilities unless particles smaller than 0.075 mm are separated from the liquids. Results also suggest that TS and TVS levels can be used to quantify odor in swine manure in the deep pits under slatted floor of swine barns.
