Poultry and swine production are important aspects of Arkansas agricultural economy. As these industries have grown, so have concderns regarding the proper utilization and disposal of the associated wastes produced. There is thus increasing emphasis by industry, individual producers, and governmental agencies on managing animal wastes to best protect the state’s ground and surface water resources. Our research has evaluated the potential impacts of pasture-applied poultry litter, poultry (caged-laying hen) manure, and swine manure constituents on runoff and sub-surface water. In addition, we investigated the effectiveness of such waste management practices as timing animal waste application to avoid storms occuring soon after application, substituting commercially-available inorganic fertilizer for poultry litter, and lightly incorportating litter and fertilizer. Some of our research efforts to date are described and summarized below.
