Evaluation of transmammary-delivered firocoxib and a vapocoolant spray to alleviate pain in piglets after surgical castration and tail docking

This study aimed to assess a novel strategy for pain management of piglets after routine processing procedures. By providing the sow an analgesic drug that is able to cross the blood-milk barrier in the mammary gland, nursing piglets can be noninvasively provided pain relief transmammary prior to surgical castration and tail docking.

Quantifying a Technique Using Carbon Monoxide for the Depopulation of Swine

The project demonstrated the euthanasia of mature sows and feeder pigs using carbon monoxide (CO) produced by a 1970 gas grain truck. The gas engine system, with no modifications, had been previously used to euthanize weaned pigs. This project further improved the method by cooling and filtering particulates out of the exhaust gas prior to contact with the pigs.
